2009-2010 WASSRA MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

CAROL BIRCH,

PRESIDENT

I started working for DET in February 1978 at Narembeen DHS as a part-time typing teacher.  By the time I gave up teaching in 1994 I had taught typing, basic computing, word processing, desk-top publishing, business studies, basic accounting, careers, vocational education, shorthand, art & craft, craft & design, from pre-primary to year ten.  I also taught adult TAFE classes in computing and shorthand.

I became a part-time school officer at Narembeen DHS in 1989 (whilst also teaching part-time).  When I gave up teaching I opened an art & craft shop in Narembeen (whilst also working as a school officer).

My life as a registrar began at Narembeen DHS in 1998.  I left Narembeen in July 2004, did a term’s relief as registrar at Lynwood PS and started at Phoenix PS in term four of 2004.  I gained the position substantively in 2005 and am still at Phoenix PS.

I joined WASSRA in 1995, went onto Management Committee in 2002 as the first country committee delegate and became President in 2003, so have been President for six years.

TRACY SEATON

VICE PRESIDENT

I started working for DET in 1992 as a library officer at Montrose Primary School in Girrawheen after being redeployed from the Department of Land Administration at the end of the 80’s boom. In 2000 my current registrar, Ann Lockett, mentored me into the workings of the front office, firstly as a relief school officer which became my permanent position in 2002 together  with my library officer position. I then went on a steep learning curve to all the duties of a registrar so that I could relieve Ann while she was jaunting around the world.

I applied for and won the substantive position of Registrar at Balga Primary School in July 2004 which is where I can still be found.

I became a member of the WASSRA committee in 2005 and I am still enjoying the challenge of being a voice for our members with the Department, organising our conventions and working with a great bunch of colleagues on the committee who continue to surprise me with their expertise and enthusiasm.

LOUISE BALL

TREASURER

I have worked for the Department of Education and Training for almost a lifetime!  I started, as relief Registrar in 1983 and worked full time for 3 months while the substantive officer took leave.  I then won the position of Library Officer at Narembeen DHS and worked in that position until 2000.  In 1997 I commenced as part time School Officer and combined the two roles giving me full time work.

In 2000 my husband and I moved to Williams and I have worked in Narrogin in a variety of roles since then: Clerical Officer at Narrogin District Education Office; SIS Project Support Officer; Registrar at East Narrogin Primary School, District Finance and Administration Officer and Corporate Services Officer.  Life is always busy and there is always so much to learn!  My current roles are Registrar at East Narrogin Primary School (0.8) and Corporate Services Officer based at the Narrogin District Education Office (0.2).

I have been a member of WASSRA for many years and thoroughly enjoy being on the Management Committee.  We are lucky to have such a great group supporting our needs.

KAY ELLIOTT

SPONSORSHIP MANAGER
I commenced working for the Department as a School Officer 1 day per week in 2003 at Brighton Primary School. Our school was located in houses with only 83 students while our new school, Butler Primary, was being built.

As the Foundation School Officer I have seen a lot of changes within our school that now has a student population of 838 but I thoroughly enjoy the daily challenges my job brings.

I attended my first WASSRA Convention in 2004, was nominated for Management Committee the same year and in 2005 I started working on the Sponsorship Portfolio.

WASSRA are very lucky to have the support of such great sponsors and I look forward to working with not only them but a very committed and dedicated WASSRA Committee.

HELEN ANTHONY

PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER/VOICE COORDINATOR

I have been a member of WASSRA since 1995 and joined the management committee in 2006.

I joined the Department of Education and Training in 1988 as a part time school assistant (now school officer) at Broome District High School.  During my first year at the school I went from part time school assistance (level 1) to school assistant – level 2 (now  Business Manager). This was a real challenge especially with computers being introduced and learning the role of finances and support staff management.  When the school was reclassified in 1990 and the schools split to a Primary School and High School I remained at the High School site as a school assistant – level 2.  I moved to Perth at the end of 1990 and was appointed as a school officer at Belridge High School as a foundation member.  During this time I decided to have a change and relieved at Joondalup and Camberwarra primary schools –and enjoyed is so much applied and was appointed to Dalmain Primary (in Kingsley) where I worked for three years before moving to the country.  I have been working at Boyanup Primary School as a registrar since 1998.  In semester two of 2008 I worked at Kingston Primary (in Australind) as a Registrar assisting the Executive team in establishing the first professional learning school in the state.  This was very challenging and rewarding setting up a new school from nothing especially when the concept had never been done before.  I am now back at Boyanup and enjoy the daily challenges working in a small country school.

TINA GODDEN

MEMBER LIASON OFFICER/WEBSITE MANAGER
After doing some short term relief for the then Registrar of East Carnarvon Primary School, I won the position on her retirement and officially joined the Department in 2003. I came from a background of managing three littlies, then managing GEHA (Government Housing) in the Gascoyne to now managing a school. (I remember the three terrors being the most challenging).

I love being a Registrar, the school environment, the challenges, the satisfaction of a job well done, working for the benefit of many children’s future and, of course, patching up the odd knee or two.

I am fortunate to work as part of a great team with always a positive look towards the future. East Carnarvon has about 310 children and 50 staff, our catchment area’s socio economic diversity ensures our challenges are varied and our results rewarding.

Where I intended to do this role until my kids were older and the holidays were less important, I now find myself very embedded in the job and definitely addicted to the holidays. So it’s looking like 25 years for me at this stage, just like my predecessor.

Always silly enough to take on a new challenge I put my hand up to join the WASSRA Management Committee in 2007, not too sure what a country member could offer. As always I am constantly learning, and WASSRA is teaching me untold new skills. Some being; learning to speak publicly (my greatest fear) and learning the in and outs of our Website.

So that’s me in a nutshell. 10 hours from Perth, in a small town with great weather. Looking forward to Convention, as always, and constantly searching for the next inspiring quote to go onto the Website.

LYN CLARK

DATABASE MANAGER
I commenced working with the Department of Education and Training in 1988 part time in a small country town called Gnowangerup. I applied for the position of school officer in 1989 and was appointed for two days per week.

I commenced full time in 1993 and continued to work as a school officer at Gnowangerup District High School until 2003 when I took up the acting position of Registrar at the Gnowangerup Agricultural School, which was very different from working in a main stream school.

I returned briefly to Gnowangerup DHS as a school officer, but decided that I aspired to be a registrar and so decided to become a relief registrar in the country area. I worked at Narrogin Primary school for three months whilst the registrar was on Long Service Leave and then at Woodanilling Primary for six months while the registrar was on leave.

I returned to Gnowangerup District High School in October 2004, but decided to move to Perth and was merit selected to the position of registrar at Redcliffe Primary School in January 2005 where I am today.

BRONWYN JACOBSON

BUSINESS MANAGER PORTFOLIO

I commenced working for the Department in 1986 at Dalwallinu DHS as a school officer and then Registrar.  This was using the ledger cards for accounting.  I can remember when we got our first school computer and how we were all too scared to turn it on.  In 1990 I then shifted to Moora and worked as a school officer at Central Midlands SHS.

In 1998 I shifted to the city, did relief work at various primary schools and worked at Kewdale SHS for 2 years helping in closing the school.  I then shifted to Como SHS as a school officer.  Eventually I ended up at Lesmurdie SHS where I am the Business Manager there since 2001.  In the past 3 years I have undertaken relieving positions in the finance branch at head office.  Presently I am working 4 days per week in my school and 1 day at Financial Services and Support Directorate in Bennett Street.  This is proving a challenge but I am enjoying the stimulation of solving problems and finding solutions. (Still a long way to go mind you!!)

I enjoy working in the school system and enjoy mixing with my fellow staff.  Every day is different and a new challenge!  Our roles have changed so much over the years, however often we are the only people who realise that fact.  I was a committee member on ASSIRA (WAMBE) for 4 years – I joined WASSRA in 2007 and became a  member on the management committee in 2008.
